No
Idling Campaign
Unnecessary
vehicle idling threatens our air quality, our health, and our high
quality of life in Burlington. In April 2007 the Burlington
Legacy Project launched its No Idling Campaign to reduce vehicle idling
in Burlington through education, public outreach, and policy advocacy
efforts. Legacy has worked with residents, businesses,
community-based organizations, and City of Burlington offices and
departments to keep Burlington a great place to live, work, and
play!

You Hold the Key to an Idle-Free
Burlington!
Limit
idling time to 30 seconds
Most vehicles, not including diesel-fueled
and those made before the early 1990s, are designed to need only 30
seconds of mechanical warm up time! By limiting the time spent
idling, and driving slowly and smoothly for the first few miles of any
trip, the wear-and-tear on a vehicle's engine is reduced since it
allows the vehicle to operate according to its mechanical design.
Turn off your engine
while stopped
If you are stopped for
more than 10 seconds turn off the engine - but, please, not in
traffic! The amount of gas used to turn off and re-start a
vehicle engine is equal to that of idling for only 10 seconds, any more
is wasting gas and contributes to unnecessary emissions and vehicle
wear-and-tear!
Combine errands
Save
time, stress, and gas by combining multiple errands in each trip taken
by vehicle. Idenitify what tasks can be combined, park in a
central location, and walk to each instead of driving from location to
location. This is a great way to get in some exercise while doing
necessary errands!
Find alternatives to
driving
Bike,
walk, carpool, or take the bus instead of driving. By using
alternative modes of transportation we can limit how many
single-occupancy vehicles are being used in and around Burlington,
which cuts down on traffic congestion, emissions, and time spent
looking for a parking space!
Tell your friends
and neighbors
Once you
change your own habits, and share the lessons learned with a friend or
neighbor to widen the circle of influence and help improve quality of
life for all!
