The Burlington Sustainable Strategies in Practice is the result of a year’s worth of research into the things that have contributed to Burlington’s well-deserved reputation as the most livable city in the United States. The research and activities undertaken were funded by a grant from the Jane B. Cook 1992 Charitable Trust and the Institute for Sustainable Communities Special Opportunities Fund, in conjunction with funding that was made available to the City of Burlington by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to prepare a sustainability plan for the city – the Legacy Project. Other contributors to the Legacy Project include the City of Burlington, the Fletcher Allen Health Center, the University of Vermont, the Main Street Landing Company, Champlain College, The Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way of Chittenden County.

The publication never could have been completed without the tireless assistance of several staff members from the Institute for Sustainable Communities, including Allison Mindel, Barbara McAndrew, Bill Ploog, Cindy Wykoff, Diane Mackay, George Hamilton, Paul Markowitz, Andrew Huff, and Georg Bakker.
